The French have always been considered at the forefront of fashion. In the 1920's Coco Chanel began making "fashion" jewelry to be worn with her fashions. Chanel mixed real with fashion jewelry. Fashion jewelry was meant to compliment and enhance the clothing styles of the day. Elsa Schiaparelli created and wore elaborate fashion jewelry pieces. Schiaparelli introduced the world to her "shocking pink" color in 1929. With the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, a revival of Egyptian style jewelry took place. Art Deco jewelry didn't take its queue from nature, instead it looked to architecture and geometry for its shapes and materials. Sleek and stylized was the form for deco jewelry. In Europe, Isadora Duncan, Pavlova and Josephine Baker ushered in the new modernistic view of women's freedom. Hollywood and Ziegfeld's Follies had worldwide impact on fashion and style. Flo Ziegfeld first used the term costume jewelry when describing jewelry he had made to match the elaborate costumes of his showgirls. Also, during the 1920's, Miriam Haskell introduced the fashion jewelry concept in the US and opened her first boutique.
